Care For Your Pearls
-
Because cultured pearls are very soft, they need special care.
-
Always store them in a soft cloth sack, separately from metallic
jewelry.
-
Pearls are organic and need to "breathe" so DO NOT store pearls
in a dry place or any airtight container, such as a plastic bag.
-
Also Do NOT store in a safe deposit box for any length of time.
The dry conditions that preserve paper products will dry out
your pearls.
-
Avoid contact with any foods containing acid, such as salad
dressings, vinegar, dishwashing soaps, and chemical cleaners.
-
Pearls need some humidity, so after wearing, wipe with a soft
damp cloth or your hand that has been dampened slightly.
-
NEVER use an ultrasonic or chemical cleaner on your pearls. If
they are very dirty, your jeweler can clean them with special
pearl cleaner.
-
Do NOT hang your pearls. It will loosen the thread they are
strung on.
-
Pearls which are worn often and get loose should be restrung -
once each year if worn often.
-
A good rule of thumb is that pearls are the LAST THING YOU PUT
ON when dressing and the FIRST THING YOU TAKE OFF. NEVER apply
perfume or hairspray when you are wearing pearl jewelry. Wait
several minutes after applying spray chemicals so the chemicals
dissipate before putting on your pearls. The chemicals can pit
the natural pearls.
-
Pearls should not be worn directly on your skin - you body
chemicals could react with them and cause them to change color.
They should be worn on a soft fabric, esp. silk - not heavy wool
that could scratch them.
-
If your pearl does get scratched, rub olive oil lightly on the
scratch.
Like Women, Pearls improve with age! Body temperature improves
the luster, sheen and tone of cultured pearls. SO, the more you
wear your pearls, the better -ENJOY THEM!
